Launceston Folk Dance Club celebrated its Centenary three years late, in April 2023. The evening proved to be a great success with Sarah Bazley and the Dartmoor Pixie Band leading the evening of dance- fun and laughter was had by all. Sarah reminisced that as an eleven year old she was brought to Launceston Town Hall by her mother who enjoyed folk dancing-and here she was calling dances some years later. It is likely that the band formed in the 1930’s has played at the Town Hall from the start. The stage decorated with bunting, the stage lit, a bumper raffle, celebration cakes made by Margaret Young and memorabilia courtesy of Jim and Anna Reade set the scene. We were delighted to welcome the mayor Leighton Penhale and his wife and the Town Crier Rob Tremain and his wife and to see them sharing in the dancing. Members new to dancing enjoyed the experience along with more experienced dancers. All the dancers enjoyed their bring and share supper known in the folk dancing world as an American supper. A new experience to those new to the folk dancing world. Launceston is one of the few clubs that holds these big dances as opposed to a village hall and may it continue. The club is grateful to the grant from the Rotary Club which helped this celebration go ahead given the last few years and current climate. It is also grateful for all the help and advice given by the Launceston Town Council staff over the years.
